For comfortable wisdom teeth extractions in OKC, Pragma Dental OKC has the attentive team you’re looking for. Here’s what you can expect if you’re planning a third molar removal:
Third Molar Consultation
Every wisdom tooth removal case begins with an exam and consultation. During this visit we’ll assess the growth and position of the wisdom teeth to determine if an extraction is necessary. Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth extracted, but if we see that they’re at-risk for pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth, oral surgery will be recommended.
Date of the Extraction
Most of our Oklahoma City wisdom teeth surgeries are performed under sedation to ensure a comfortable and efficient procedure. After we make you (or your child) comfortable, we’ll numb the extraction site and then remove the wisdom tooth in that location. Typically, most people will have all four wisdom teeth extracted during the same visit.
If sutures are needed, we’ll usually place a dissolvable stitch at that area to ensure proper healing and a lower risk of infection.
On average, most wisdom tooth removal appointments take less than an hour to complete from start to finish.
Home Care and Recovery
This is the most important part of your oral surgery process. You’ll want to stay hydrated (avoiding any caffeine, alcohol, or drinking through a straw) and eat soft foods that won’t irritate the surgical sites. Take anti-inflammatory medications or other prescriptions as directed to reduce swelling and the risk of discomfort.
Sometimes a topical rinse or gel will need to be applied. Otherwise, you can gently rinse with warm saltwater a few times a day to remove food debris and keep the extraction sites clean. Apply a cold compress on and off the side of your face every 20 minutes to keep swelling to a minimum.
If for any reason you experience heightened discomfort or the extraction site continues to bleed, let us know right away.
Follow Up Appointment
About a week or so later, our dentist may see you back for an oral surgery follow-up. If so, we’ll be looking to make sure your extraction sites are healing properly and that all of the sutures have dissolved.
What About “Dry Sockets”?
Dry sockets are rare but extremely uncomfortable. They’re caused by a disruption of the blood clot at the site of your extraction. To reduce your chances of a dry socket, follow your home care instructions carefully.
